Changi Airport is consistently rated the world's best airport — and for good reason. It has a cinema, a butterfly garden, a rooftop swimming pool, and a 40-metre indoor waterfall. You could honestly spend your entire layover there. But Singapore itself is just 30 minutes away by MRT, and the city is so compact, clean, and staggeringly good for food that spending a night in town is well worth the effort.
The Logistics: Visa and Entry
Most nationalities can enter Singapore visa-free for up to 30–90 days — check the Singapore ICA website for your specific passport. Keep your outbound flight ticket handy when clearing immigration. The MRT from Changi to the city centre costs around S$2 and takes 30 minutes — no taxis needed unless you have heavy luggage.
Hour-by-Hour: A 24-Hour Singapore Itinerary
Arrival (Afternoon/Evening)
Drop your bag at a hotel near Bugis or Little India (both well-connected on the MRT and significantly cheaper than the Marina Bay area). Freshen up, then head straight to Lau Pa Sat Festival Market in the CBD for dinner. This is a stunning Victorian cast-iron market from 1894, now a hawker centre serving everything from chicken rice to satay grilled over charcoal at outdoor stalls. Dinner for two: S$15–$25.
Evening
Walk to Marina Bay. The Gardens by the Bay Supertree Grove is free to walk through at night, when the trees light up in a spectacular sound-and-light show (6.45pm and 8.45pm daily). The view from the Helix Bridge with Marina Bay Sands reflected in the water is one of the great sights in Asia.
Morning
Wake up early and head to Chinatown for breakfast — a bowl of laksa or kaya toast with half-boiled eggs and kopi (traditional coffee) at a local kopitiam costs S$3–$6. Then walk through the Sri Mariamman Temple and the shophouse streets.
Late Morning
Take the MRT to Little India for the sensory experience — incense, spice shops, gold jewellers, and Tamil temple gopurams. Then cross to Kampong Glam (the Malay quarter) to see the Sultan Mosque and browse the boutiques on Arab Street and Haji Lane.
Lunch
Hawker centres are Singapore's greatest gift to the world. Tiong Bahru Market, Maxwell Food Centre, and Old Airport Road Food Centre are all legendary. Plate of Hainanese chicken rice from a hawker stall: S$3.50. At a Michelin-starred hawker stall: S$6.
Afternoon (Before Departure)
If time allows: Sentosa Island for a couple of hours (beach, cable car, Fort Siloso), or the National Museum of Singapore (free on Friday evenings). Then back to Changi — give yourself at least two hours before your flight, and stop for the famous Jewel waterfall on the way through.
"Singapore rewards efficiency. You can eat incredibly well, see a genuinely beautiful city, and still make your connecting flight — if you plan it properly."
Practical Tips
- Currency: Singapore Dollar (SGD). 1 USD ≈ S$1.35. Mostly cashless — credit cards and PayNow QR codes work everywhere.

- Weather: Hot and humid year-round. Pack light, carry water, and embrace air conditioning.
- Free Wi-Fi: Available throughout the MRT network and most public spaces.
